COVID Catch Up Premium Report 2020-2021
Stanway Fiveways Primary School
Covid-19 Catch Up Premium 2020 – 2021
In June, the government announced £1 billion of funding to support children and young people to catch up following school closures due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Further guidance has been released (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-catch-up-premium) showing that the money is to be split between a catch-up premium and a national tutoring scheme. The money for the catch up premium is designed to ensure that schools have the support they need for all pupils to make up for lost teaching time, and the money for the national tutoring school is designed to provide additional, targeted support for those children and young people who need the most help.
The catch-up premium is funded on a per pupil basis at £80 per pupil. This will be based on the previous year’s census, meaning we are predicting Stanway Fiveways will be in receipt of £36,320 (454 x £80). It is not expected, however, that there will be a spend of £80 on each and every pupil in schools. The government has made it clear that the spending of this money will be down to schools to allocate as they see fit. To support schools to make the best use of this funding, the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has published a support guide for schools with evidence-based approaches to catch up for all students.
The broad aims for catch up at Fiveways is:
- Attainment outcomes at end of 2020-21 for all year groups will be at least in line with those at the end of 2019-20.
- Phonic screening check results to be in line with national.

Employment of an experienced full-time teacher to provide small group interventions to targeted children. |
£28,300 |
Following initial assessments in September, these interventions will focus mainly on KS1 as the results showed this is where there are extensive subject knowledge gaps. |
Intensive and additional phonic sessions to take place alongside the whole class sessions. Class teachers to work alongside this teacher to plan high-quality interventions that are designed to meet the specific gaps of the children. Each intervention will take place twice a week for the duration of a half-term. They will then be assessed accordingly. |

After school small Group tuition sessions. |
£8,020 |
Following initial assessments that were carried out in September, teachers have identified children who have fallen behind and need additional support to catch up. Class teachers will run these sessions, as they know the specific gaps of the children and their impact will be greater. |
Teachers to identify gaps in children’s core subject knowledge which need addressing. Teachers to plan a 10 week programme of after school tuition. Following the completion of the tuition programme children will be reassessed to measure the impact. |
