Our week got off to a fantastic start with a visit from some of the Y3 children. They came to perform a Christmas song they had been practising to develop their sense of rhythm. The Y1 children were very impressed and were an excellent audience.
The main focus in Year One this week has been the performances of our nativity, A Bundle of Joy. On Tuesday the children performed to their siblings, along with our paired reading classes. Then on Wednesday and Thursday it was the turn of the parents to watch our show. The teachers are very proud of all of the children and the confidence they showed during the performances.
As well as this learning has continued in the classroom. In Phonics we have been practising reading a mixture of real and alien words containing the new Phase 5 digraphs that we have been learning. In Maths we have been learning to recognise 2D and 3D shapes. Finally in English we completed our Lost and Found unit with an independent write of the first paragraph of the story, changing the setting to the rainforest.

The first week of December and Christmas has definitely begun in Year One! On Monday the children enjoyed watching a panto in school, Beauty and the Beast. They were a fantastic audience, participating in all the right places. On Wednesday it was our Christmas dinner and Christmas jumper day, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. The teachers were really impressed by their lovely manners as dinner was served to them.
In between nativity rehearsals lots of learning has still been going on. The focus in English this week was innovating the Lost and Found story the children have been learning. The setting was changed to a desert and the children rewrote the story alongside their teachers. In maths the children have been completing quizzes to show how much progress they have made so far this year. Finally in D&T the children designed their healthy fruit snack, deciding if they would like to make a smoothie, fruit kebab or fruit salad and which fruits they would like to include.

This week rehearsals for our Christmas nativity continued and the children are becoming much more confident with their words and acting.
In English we used adjectives to describe the setting we will be writing about when we innovate the Lost and Found story we have been learning. We also learnt what a simile is and came up with lots of great examples to describe movement such as wriggling like a worm.
We are now at the end of our addition and subtraction unit in maths so this week the children have been tackling a mixture of addition and subtraction number sentences and word problems, making sure they used the correct operation to find the answer. We were also finding fact families – the children were given 3 numbers and had to write 2 addition and 2 subtraction number sentences that just used these numbers.
Finally, in D&T we practised our chopping, grating and peeling skills ready to use when we make a healthy snack in a couple of weeks time.

This week in maths we have been learning about subtraction. We started the week by reading and writing subtraction number sentences and using tens frames and counters to find the answer. We then moved on to drawing counters to support our working out, then finally we have been solving subtraction word problems.
In English we began our new Talk 4 Writing unit based on the story Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. We have been learning the story using symbols and actions as well as beginning to generate interesting vocabulary that we will be able to use in our own stories later in the term.
In geography we have been learning about different types of weather and which types typically occur in the different seasons.
The children also enjoyed participating in a positive noticing day for Agents of Change. All the children got fully involved in the day and some lovely tags were exchanged identifying positive things that had been noticed about each child by the adults and their peers.

This week in Year One we have begun rehearsing our Christmas Nativity. Our teachers are very impressed with how quickly we have learnt the songs and actions to go with them.
In English, we have been writing the final paragraph for our information text about ice giants – where they live. We are now looking forward to our next Talk 4 Writing text, which will be a story called ‘Lost and Found’.
In maths we have been answering word problems involving addition. To do this we had to read the problem, identify the important information and then draw our working out to find the answer.
In science, we continued to learn about seasons with a walk around the school grounds to see if we could spot any signs of autumn.
Finally, we began our D & T unit. We will be designing and making a healthy fruit dessert so this week we tasted different fruits to see which ones were our favourites.
Friday 7th November 2025
A very busy first week back for Year One with lots of new learning and challenges taking place both inside and outside of the classroom. It was lovely to see lots of team work happening in the outside area this week as the children got reacquainted after the half term break.
In English this week the children began their innovation of the tree giants information text. The version they wrote alongside the teacher was all about ice giants, describing what they looked like and what they liked to eat.
In maths, we continued our work on addition with numbers to 10. The children used part part whole models to support their working out using practical resources and pictorial representations.
The children began their geography topic entitled ‘Whatever the Weather’. This week we looked at the globe and maps of the world. We identified the equator, the North Pole and the South Pole and then learnt that hotter countries are found closer to the equator and that it gets colder the further away from the equator you are.
Finally, in phonics this week the children began to learn the Phase 5 phonemes, this week’s tuff tray challenge was to read and sort a variety of real and nonsense words.
