Spring term

Friday 9th January 2026

Welcome back, Year 4!

We hope you have all had a restful Christmas break and wish you a very Happy New Year. We have certainly had a busy and exciting start to the Spring term. This week, we kicked off by diving into our new PE unit, exploring squash. The children have been learning fun techniques such as controlling the ball, rallying with a partner, and developing quick reactions on the court. In Science, we began our topic on electricity, where the children created simple circuits and explored how components work together to make them function. In Computing, we launched our Artificial Intelligence unit, with the children exploring different tools and websites to develop an understanding of what AI is and how it is used.

To end the week, we enjoyed a wonderful Anti-Racism workshop. Through games and scenarios, the children explored important themes around fairness, respect, and celebrating differences.

It has been a fantastic start to the term, and we are looking forward to all the learning ahead.

This week in Squash, we continued our discussions about the Roman Cup while developing key skills. The children explored balancing and moving with the ball, building both coordination and control.

In History, the children examined different Roman buildings, comparing their similarities and differences and discussing their purposes.

In French, we focused on key vocabulary linked to traditions, helping the children broaden their language skills.

We also began our music sessions with George, our music teacher. The children were introduced to the ukulele, learning about crotchets, tempo, and beat, as well as what a chord is.

This week in Year 4, the children really enjoyed developing new skills in dodgeball, practising accurate throwing, quick dodging, catching and teamwork, before taking part in a fast-paced mini tournament to show off what they had learned. In Art, the children have been exploring mosaics by looking closely at Roman mosaics, learning about pattern, shape, colour and tessellation, and designing their own mosaic artwork; some pupils have even begun creating their final pieces, which we will continue to focus on over the next few weeks. In French, the children have been discussing traditions, learning simple vocabulary such as les traditions, la famille, une fête, Noël and Pâques, while practising speaking and listening skills.

This week, Year 4 have worked hard in their Maths unit on fractions. They explored improper and mixed numbers, including how to convert between them, and used bar models to represent and draw their understanding. In Music, the children continued learning to play the ukulele, focusing on the F chord and exploring semibreves. They also took part in a special workshop about careers and their future, where they discussed the skills and qualities needed for different jobs. In Art, the children completed their Roman-inspired tiles, producing some fantastic and creative pieces.

This week, Year 4 have been extremely busy! We have completed our Roman catapults, and the children thoroughly enjoyed building them and having a go at testing them out. It was wonderful to see their teamwork and creativity in action. In maths, we explored how to convert mixed fractions into improper fractions. The children have worked very hard and have shown a great understanding of this concept. We also continued learning how to play the ukulele, developing our skills and confidence. These lessons will continue in Spring 2.

We ended the week with the children dressing up as their favourite animals to raise money for the RSPCA, chosen this year by the school council. The children all looked fantastic, and it was a lovely way to finish the half term while supporting such a worthwhile cause.

Have a wonderful half term!
