The children have been working hard in all subjects in the first week back after the October half-term. It has marked the start of nativity preparations, sending words home for children to practise and we have been starting to learn the songs. In maths, the children have been learning about part whole models where two numbers are represented in the parts and then added together to make the whole. There was lots of fantastic independent learning in maths this week. In English the children have been innovating and writing their own version of an information text on the ice giant, based on the one they learnt about the tree giant. We have been very impressed with their sentence writing, focussing on adjectives, capital letters and full stops. In science we have been learning about the seasons as part of our new topic 'Whatever the weather'. In the outdoor area, the children have been enjoying creating their own fireworks pictures using oil pastels and paper.

This week in the SCS PE lessons the children have been learning to correctly and accurately pass a rugby ball in a group as well as taken part in team activities. The SCS coaches have particularly noticed an improvement in the children's ball skills this half-term and the children have really enjoyed the sessions. In maths the children have been learning to add two numbers together and write addition number sentences that match a visual representation. They have also been learning to number bonds to 10, using counters and a tens frame to help them understand these visually. In English the children have been writing sentences about the Ice giant, which was an innovation on the original story of the Tree giant. In Magnolia class, the children have been working hard to demonstrate the sculpture skills they have learnt by making their own animal sculpture. In RE, both classes have continued to learn about the objects important to Hindus. Both classes have continued to work hard on their reading, both with a partner in year 1 and a with a year 5 reading partner.

In maths this week the children have begun to practise adding using pieces of Numicon and counting the holes to add the amounts together. In English, the children were very excited to learn about the mythical creatures 'tree giants'. We found evidence of them in the outdoor area in the form of glittery conkers and a photo of them on our playground. The children were inspired to make their own tree giants using cardboard and paper. They have then learnt to retell the information text about tree giants using a story map and actions. In SCS PE lessons the children have been learning to pass the basketball using chest pass in team activities. Magnolia class have been learning about Hindu beliefs in RE through objects that are used in worship. All of the children have continued to explore the outdoor area and were particularly excited to start using new resources kindly bought by the PTA which included cars, a car mat, barbie style dolls, sand toys, construction role play toys and dolls house toys and dolls.

The children have had a fantastic start to their time in year 1 and we have been very impressed with their curiosity and enthusiasm for learning! This week as part of our continents week, the children have been learning about Europe with a particular focus on France. The children have used paper collage techniques to make French flags and a collage of Mickey or Minnie Mouse. Using junk modelling materials, children had the opportunity to make a model of the Eiffel Tower. They have also enjoyed exploring the outdoor area, singing songs to learn French numbers and the names of the continents as well as taking part in games and activities in the classroom. Friday was a particulularly exciting day as the children tasted a French baguette with butter, boursin cheese and pain au chocolat. The pain au chocolat was particularly popular!
