This week, Y2 have been busy innovating the Talk 4 Writing text we have been learning, Zig the Alien. They came up with some great ideas for how the story could be adapted and used some fantastic adjectives to describe the settings in their stories.

In RE this week, the children learnt about the importance of light in the festival of Diwali, they really enjoyed making their own paper plate diva lamps which are an important part of the festival.

In Science the children have been learning about the properties of materials and sorting materials based on these properties.

On Thursday mornings, the children take part in paired reading with an older class in the school, they really look forward to sharing books with these children every week.

In maths this week the children have been continuing to develop their understanding of number. They have enjoyed making numbers to 100 using the base 10 resources – counting out the correct number of 10 sticks and 1 cubes to make a two-digit number.

In RE the children made Menorah’s as part of their learning about the Jewish festival of Hannukah.

During our computing session, the children began to use Scratch. This week the children were designing their own sprite character which they will be programming to do different things over the next few weeks.

Finally, in PE the children have been working with the SCS coaches to develop their rugby skills.

This week Year 2 have begun their new Talk 4 Writing unit based on the story, Zig the Alien. The children drew a story map and learnt actions to help them remember the story, as well as spending time generating vocabulary that they will use when they write their own version of the story, later this term.

In maths the children have been continuing to work on numbers to 100, using number facts to 10 to help them add and subtract multiples of 10. They have also been doing some fun activities to help develop their familiarity with the 100 square.

In RE this week the children made Christingles, while in Science, they had to guess the material using only their sense of touch to help them.

Finally, in PSHE the children looked at the traffic light coding on food packaging to help them decide whether food was healthy or not.

This week has been a busy one in Y2!

 In maths the children have been focussing on the multiples of 10 or the ‘ty’ numbers. They have undertaken lots of practical activities to secure their knowledge.

In science the children have been learning about materials. This week they have been exploring the different materials that objects are made from.

In English the children revisited some of the skills they learnt in Y1 and really enjoyed writing some short stories. It was lovely to see them so enthusiastic about writing.

It has been a pleasure to welcome the children back after the summer holiday. We had a great week getting to know the children and learning about North America for our 'Continents Week'. Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed learning about different cultures within the continent, food tasting, making pasta jewellery which represented a country, as well as creating a strong, stable bridge based on the 'Golden Gate Bridge'. The children worked fantastically in their groups, sharing ideas and working out how to improve their designs.
