Year 5
20.04.26
Year 5 have had a wonderful and very busy first week back at school. One of the highlights of the week was starting Forest School. The children were introduced to the rules and expectations for working safely in the forest area and had the opportunity to explore the environment. They thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors, especially with the lovely weather we had.
In English, we have begun learning about explanation texts. The children have started to look at the key features of this type of writing and discussed how explanation texts help us understand how and why things happen. We are looking forward to developing these skills further over the coming weeks.
As part of our DT topic, the children have also begun researching Mexican food. To support this learning, they had the opportunity to taste a selection of foods including tortilla chips, salsa and guacamole. The children really enjoyed trying the different flavours and discussing the ingredients.
It has been a fantastic start to the term and the children have returned with great enthusiasm for their learning.

Year 5 have been very busy recently with lots of exciting hands-on learning opportunities. At Forest School, we are continuing to learn the rules and routines needed to stay safe while enjoying outdoor learning. The children have also been learning how to safely use saws to cut wood, developing both practical skills and teamwork.
We were also very lucky to have a visit from a mobile planetarium, where the children enjoyed an immersive experience learning all about space and the solar system.
In PE, we have started learning about the rules and tactics of American football. The children have loved trying out new skills and understanding how the game is played.
In art, we have begun designing our colourful Mexican skull masks inspired by Día de los Muertos. Soon, the children will bring their designs to life by creating them in clay. We cannot wait to see the finished results!

Year 5 have continued to enjoy their Forest School sessions and recently had the opportunity to toast marshmallows around the fire. The children loved taking part in this special outdoor experience while continuing to build their confidence and teamwork skills. We have also been pond dipping and discovering the different creatures living in the water. The hammocks were particularly successful and quickly became a favourite activity!
In the afternoons, we have been learning all about Mexico, exploring its culture, traditions and geography. The children have shown great enthusiasm and curiosity during our topic work.
In French, we are learning how to describe the weather and use weather phrases confidently. Soon, the children will have the exciting opportunity to present their own weather forecast in French to the class!
