Welcome to Year One
Summer 1 - To Infinity and Beyond
Friday 9th May
Another lovely week for both year 1 classes; we enjoyed hearing about their extra adventures over the bank holiday weekend.
In English, we've started innovating our action story 'The Giant's Lost Teeth' - the children have really risen to the challenge of including the tools and the taught skills. There's also some really wonderful improvements in stamina and handwriting which is great news as we prepare for year 2. Next week we'll be finishing this off and
In maths, we have moved on to sharing. We've focused on the vocabulary of 'equally' and ensuring that each group we make has the same quantity. We've completed this with practical equipment and also drawing our own groups.
In Science, we have been identifying the differences between amphibians, fish and birds and labelling their body parts. We also created a timeline of space travel during history and explored what makes a good friend in PSHE.
Friday 2nd May
What a lovely week of sunshine we've had! The children have had a great time enjoying the sunshine in amongst the rest of their learning. The highlight of our week was definitely the WonderDome - Dr Dave was thoroughly engaging and took us on a fabulous journey through the solar system and beyond.
In English, we have continued to prepare for writing our action stories by learning about onomatopoia, powerful verbs and adverbs. We are looking forward to writing our stories next week where we can apply these skills further.
In maths we've explored different ways of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s including grouping and arrays. We then used these methods to solve worded problems which was a challenge but the children did wonderfully.
In Science we explored the difference between domesticated and wild animals. Outdoor PE has brought with it more opportunities to practise ahead of Sports Day - both classes showed great patience and resilience with their Egg and Spoon and Sack races. We finished the warm week with a special treat of reading together across the year group.
Friday 25th April
The first week of the Summer term is complete and the children have come back with great enthusiasm and focus.
In English, the children have started their new action story unit and have written some excellent descriptive sentences. They ended the week with a mysterious letter which asked them to hunt down all the sender's lost teeth. The children had such fun searching for the teeth in the outside area.
Maths has been the start of our multiplication and division unit and the children have grown in confidence when counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. They will continue to draw on these skills in the coming weeks.
Our space topic has started with learning about Neil Armstrong and the moon landing which also enabled us to receive an Agents of Change stamp.
During outdoor PE, the children have started preparing for sports day by practising their three-legged racing technique. The children showed great determination and teamwork to improve.
