Welcome to Year One

Summer 1 - To Infinity and Beyond

Friday 16th May

This week has seen Year 1 writing their independent action stories; we have been impressed by how well they've remembered the original story and how creative some children have been with reinventing the plot. We will finish these off on Monday before starting our new unit after half term.

Maths has seen the classes introduced to fractions - they have been very confident with identifying half a shape and looking at half of different quantities.

The weather has been beautiful so the children have enjoyed taking advantage of the outside space during COOL time. Science has seen us exploring the body parts of reptiles, mammals and insects. In PE we continued to prepare for Sports Day and the children are very excited. The children have really enjoyed reading Mole's Star as part of our whole class reading lessons. We have also spent a lot of time preparing for our DT project next week by reading different books which have push, pull and spin mechanisms. The children really enjoyed the different techniques.

Friday 9th May

Another lovely week for both year 1 classes; we enjoyed hearing about their extra adventures over the bank holiday weekend.

In English, we've started innovating our action story 'The Giant's Lost Teeth' - the children have really risen to the challenge of including the tools and the taught skills. There's also some really wonderful improvements in stamina and handwriting which is great news as we prepare for year 2. Next week we'll be finishing this off and

In maths, we have moved on to sharing. We've focused on the vocabulary of 'equally' and ensuring that each group we make has the same quantity. We've completed this with practical equipment and also drawing our own groups.

In Science, we have been identifying the differences between amphibians, fish and birds and labelling their body parts. We also created a timeline of space travel during history and explored what makes a good friend in PSHE.

Friday 2nd May

What a lovely week of sunshine we've had! The children have had a great time enjoying the sunshine in amongst the rest of their learning. The highlight of our week was definitely the WonderDome - Dr Dave was thoroughly engaging and took us on a fabulous journey through the solar system and beyond.

In English, we have continued to prepare for writing our action stories by learning about onomatopoia, powerful verbs and adverbs. We are looking forward to writing our stories next week where we can apply these skills further.

In maths we've explored different ways of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s including grouping and arrays. We then used these methods to solve worded problems which was a challenge but the children did wonderfully.

In Science we explored the difference between domesticated and wild animals. Outdoor PE has brought with it more opportunities to practise ahead of Sports Day - both classes showed great patience and resilience with their Egg and Spoon and Sack races. We finished the warm week with a special treat of reading together across the year group.
