A short but busy week in Year One due to the bank holiday weekend.
In Maths we have started to learn about fractions. This week the children have focused on finding one half of shapes and amounts.
In English we have also started a new unit of learning. This time the focus will be writing an action story based on the story we have begun to learn – The Giant’s Lost Teeth. This week we have been collecting interesting vocabulary that we will be using to describe our main character when we write our own action stories later on in the unit.
In other areas of the curriculum, we have also been learning the names of the parts of a tree and to identify trees in our school grounds. We have continued to enjoy our SCS PE sessions, developing our bat and ball skills.

This week in English the children have been completing an independent write of their own version of the Penguin’s Day Out recount. Absolutely fabulous writing from everyone, we are very impressed.
In Maths we have been doing lots more work on division by sharing and the children are becoming much more confident at using bar models to help them do this.
In PE the children have been developing their bat and ball skills with sessions led by the SCS coaches. Finally, in science, we have been investigating and naming the different parts of a plant by looking at real life plants.

Another busy week for Y1!
This week in Maths we begun to learn how to divide by sharing equally. We did this practically first by sharing cubes between plates and then went on to represent our working out pictorially using bar models.
In English the children wrote their own innovated recount about a lost animal alongside the teacher. We were very impressed by the presentation of their writing.
In Design Technology this term the children are going to be creating a picture with moving parts. This week they evaluated a selection of books with moving parts. They then went on to make a picture that included a slider mechanism.
The highlight of the week was the WonderDome session where the children got to go inside an inflatable planetarium and experience a flight around the world and into space, One of the children commented, “it felt like I was in a dream”.

The children have had a great first week back after the Easter holidays.
In English they have been learning their new Talk4Writing text, a recount called Penguin’s Day Out. They have also been learning about the features they need to include when they write their own recounts – past tense verbs, time adverbials and first-person pronouns.
In Maths this week we have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and using numicon to help us find the answers to repeated addition number sentences such as 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 =.
Also this week, the children went on a walk around the school grounds to look for signs of spring. Finally in History we have begun our Space topic and have been learning facts about Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.
